Abstract

This article explores the complex relationship between judges and machines in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), focusing on the transformation from neurons to norms through an interdisciplinary lens. The first part examines the promises and limits of algorithmic justice. While AI demonstrates remarkable efficiency in processing data, structuring information, and supporting legal consistency, it remains fundamentally limited by its inability to assume moral responsibility or transform knowledge into binding norms. The responsibility gap, the risk of bias replication, and the illusion of objectivity highlight the need for caution in integrating AI into judicial decision-making.

The second part investigates the cognitive and philosophical foundations of judgment, drawing insights from neuroscience, philosophy, and law. Neuroscience reveals the interplay between cognition, emotion, and unconscious processes in judicial reasoning, while philosophy—from Aristotle’s virtue ethics to Pascal’s reflections on human transcendence—emphasizes the irreducible human dimension of justice. Law, as an institutional framework, provides legitimacy and authority to judicial norms that cannot be delegated to machines.

Introduction

The increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in judicial systems is reshaping the very foundations of law. From predictive algorithms in sentencing to machine-assisted dispute resolution, the legal world is entering a new er of computational reasoning. This transformation raises both promises and concerns: while AI offers efficiency and objectivity, it also questions fundamental principles such as impartiality, accountability, and human dignity.

The history of justice has always been closely linked to the evolution of human knowledge and technology. From the early codes of Mesopotamia and the Corpus Juris Civilis of Justinian, to the advent of the printing press and later the rise of computerized legal databases, the law has continually adapted to social and technical change. Yet the twenty-first century introduces a new and unprecedented challenge: the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the judicial process. Unlike earlier tools, AI does not merely assist with record-keeping or data storage. It increasingly claims the capacity to reason, to predict judicial outcomes, and in some instances to “decide.” This shift raises a fundamental question: can a machine, devoid of consciousness and moral intention, truly participate in the administration of justice?

The problem is not merely theoretical. In several jurisdictions, AI tools are already used to calculate risk assessments for parole, to suggest sentencing guidelines, or to detect patterns of fraud. These applications bring undeniable efficiency, reducing human workload and accelerating judicial proceedings. However, they also pose profound ethical and philosophical dilemmas. Justice has traditionally been conceived as more than a mechanical application of rules; it requires prudence, equity, and the ability to weigh the uniqueness of each case. Aristotle himself defined justice not as a mere act but as a habit of the soul – a virtue cultivated by human beings in their search for the good

. A machine, by contrast, lacks both soul and virtue, and therefore cannot embody justice in its deepest sense.

This tension between human [1]judgment and mechanical calculation is not new in philosophy. Plato, in The Republic, observed that “the judge must seek the truth, not persuasion like a sophist”. His warning resonates strongly today: while AI systems can persuade through predictive accuracy and statistical models, they cannot pursue truth in the ethical and moral sense that underpins law. This distinction explains why the debate about judges and machines is not limited to technical feasibility but touches on the very foundations of jurisprudence.

Furthermore, the subject acquires renewed importance in light of neuroscience and cognitive science. Contemporary research into the functioning of the brain reveals that human judgment is not[2] purely rational. It involves emotions, unconscious processes, and what Al-Ghazali once described as the need for light to guide reason. The judicial decision, therefore, cannot be reduced to logical algorithms without losing essential dimensions of fairness and humanity. The comparison between neurons and algorithms is illuminating, but it must be treated with caution: biological cognition and artificial computation are not equivalent, and their relation to normativity is fundamentally different.

The interdisciplinary character of this inquiry is precisely what makes it urgent and intellectually fertile. Law cannot ignore technological innovation, but neither can it surrender its ethical foundations to mere machines. Neuroscience, philosophy, and artificial intelligence studies together provide a framework for analyzing what is at stake. Can AI truly contribute to justice without eroding the humanistic and normative essence of the law? Or should it remain a subordinate tool, strictly confined to supporting the human judge rather than replacing her?

This article will address these questions by tracing the path “from neurons to norms.” It will first examine the biological and cognitive bases of judgment, highlighting the human dimensions that distinguish judicial reasoning from algorithmic processing (Part I). It will then analyze the rise of AI in judicial contexts, exploring both its promises and its risks, and confronting these developments with ethical and philosophical perspectives (Part II). The ambition is not to reject technology, but to situate it within the broader horizon of justice, where machines may assist but never replace the moral responsibility of the judge.[3]

Indeed law has historically evolved in response to technological innovations: the invention of writing enabled codification, the printing press democratized legal texts, and electronic databases facilitated legal research. AI, however, introduces a paradigm shift. It no longer only supports legal practitioners in administrative tasks but actively participates in legal reasoning, creating what some call “algorithmic justice.”¹

The challenge lies in balancing technological efficiency with the humanistic values of law. Legal systems cannot merely integrate algorithms without reflecting on their epistemological implications. Indeed, law is not only a set of rules but also a discourse of justice, based on interpretation, debate, and human judgment.² A mechanical substitution of judges by machines risks reducing justice to an exercise in statistics, ignoring the complexity of human cognition and morality.³

At the same time, neuroscience provides new insights into the human decision-making process. By studying the brain’s mechanisms of perception, memory, and judgment, neuroscientific research invites legal scholars to reconsider the foundations of normativity.⁴

This interdisciplinary dialogue, between neurons and algorithms, may help build a more robust model of justice in the 21st century.

The present paper proposes an interdisciplinary approach structured in two main parts: first, we examine the promises and limits of artificial intelligence within judicial systems; second, we explore how neuroscience and cognitive science can contribute to the legal debate, moving “from neuron to norm.”

Part1 :Artificial intellegence and the judicial function

Artificial intelligence is already being deployed in several judicial systems around the world. In the United States, AI tools such as COMPAS (Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions) are used to assess the risk of recidivism.¹ In China, “smart courts” experiment with online dispute resolution, supported by machine-generated recommendations.² In Europe, pilot projects test predictive analytics to evaluate the probability of success in civil litigation.³

The main promise of these tools lies in their efficiency: they can process vast quantities of data in seconds, identify patterns invisible to human judges, and offer a degree of consistency in decision-making.⁴ By reducing the risk of arbitrariness, AI could contribute to a more equal access to justice.

However, this efficiency is not without risks. Algorithms are not neutral: they reflect the data they are Arcalgorithms reproduce such biases, they risk reinforcing systemic injustices rather than eliminating them. This is what scholars describe as th[4]e “black box problem,” where neither judges nor litigants can fully understand the reasoning behind a machine’s recommendation.⁶

Moreover, the judicial function cannot be reduced to prediction alone. Law involves interpretation, deliberation, and the capacity to adapt principles to individual cases. Justice requires empathy and recognition of human dignity—dimensions that no algorithm can replicate.⁷ The risk is that justice may become technocratic, governed by efficiency rather than fairness.

Subsection A: The Promises of Algorithmic Justice

Algorithmic justice represents one of the most ambitious promises of artificial intelligence: the idea that machines can contribute to fairness, consistency, and rationality in the judicial process. Unlike earlier forms of legal technology—such as archives, databases, or electronic registries—AI systems do not merely store information but actively transform data into structured predictions and analyses. This capacity situates them at the heart of the epistemological chain: from data to information, from information to knowledge, and ultimately in support of legal norms.

In order to capture the epistemological trajectory that underlies the present study, the following diagram offers a visual representation of the transformation from mere data into structured information, from information into articulated knowledge, and ultimately from knowledge into binding legal norms. This progression not only reflects the interdisciplinary dialogue between neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and law, but also demonstrates how the raw material of human and machine cognition can be transfigured into normative frameworks that shape justice and social order.

The first promise of algorithmic justice lies in efficiency. Courts worldwide suffer from delays, case backlogs, and excessive procedural costs. Algorithms can process large datasets within seconds, classifying cases, suggesting sentencing ranges, and even highlighting precedents. This acceleration of judicial processes responds to the practical demand for timely justice—without which, as the legal maxim reminds us, justice delayed becomes justice denied.

The second promise concerns equality and consistency. Human judges, however virtuous, remain vu[5]lnerable to fatigue, prejudice, and unconscious bias. Properly designed algorithms can, in principle, reduce disparities in sentencing by applying the law in a uniform manner across similar cases. This aspiration resonates[6] with Averroes’s affirmation that “truth does not contradict truth”. A legal system that integrates AI in its reasoning seeks precisely this harmony: that equal cases be treated equally, reflecting the coherence of law itself.

The third promise is accessibility and democratization of justice. AI-powered legal tools—chatbots, automated dispute resolution platforms, or predictive models—offer legal information to individuals who might otherwise be excluded by complexity or cost. In this sense, AI helps transform scattered legal data into understandable information for ordinary citizens, narrowing the gap between law and society.

From a philosophical perspective, these promises are not without precedent. Montaigne once remarked that “the subtlest wisdom” may arise from careful observation. AI systems, by identifying hidden patterns across thousands of cases, embody this potential for subtle discovery. Likewise, Plato’s reminder that “the judge must seek the truth, not persuasion like a sophist” finds a modern echo in algorithms designed to reveal empirical regularities rather than rhetorical appearances.

Nevertheless, one must recognize the limits of these promises. While AI excels in transforming data into information, and even in producing forms of “knowledge,” it cannot itself create norms. For Aristotle, justice was a habit of the soul, not a mathematical result. This highlights a fundamental truth: algorithms may assist the judicial function, but they cannot replace the moral responsibility of the human judge in transforming knowledge into binding norms.[7]

Subsection B: The Limits of Algorithmic Justice

While the promises of algorithmic justice are alluring, its limitations are equally profound. These limits are not merely technical; they are conceptual, ethical, and philosophical. They raise questions about the very nature of justice, which cannot be reduced to prediction, consistency, or efficiency alone.

1. From Correlation to Truth: The Epistemological Limit

AI systems excel at finding correlations in massive datasets, but correlation is not equivalent to truth. As Plato warned in The Republic, “the judge must seek the truth, not persuasion like a sophist”. Algorithms risk replacing truth-seeking with pattern recognition, persuading courts through statistical accuracy rather than moral reasoning.

Moreover, while AI can process data and produce information, it struggles to transform that information into genuine knowledge, and even less into norms. Knowledge involves interpretation, context, and human experience; norms require a conscious act of responsibility. Al-Ghazali’s metaphor is instructive here: “Reason is like the eye: it sees, but it needs the light to perceive”. Algorithms may see patterns, but they lack the light of ethical judgment, which only human conscience provides

2. The Problem of Bias and Fairness

One of the most pressing limits of algorithmic justice is the risk of bias replication. Algorithms are trained on historical data, which often reflect systemic inequalities in society—whether in policing, sentencing, or access to justice. As a result, algorithmic outputs may perpetuate or even amplify discrimination against marginalized groups.

The promise of equality thus encounters its paradox: machines can only be as fair as the data they are trained on. Montaigne’s observation that “the subtlest folly grows out of the subtlest wisdom” captures this danger: the more sophisticated the system, the more insidious its errors, particularly when those errors appear objective and neutral

3. The Absence of Moral Responsibility

Perhaps the deepest limitation of algorithmic justice lies in the absence of moral responsibility. A judge is accountable for her decision: she signs her name, explains her reasoning, and embodies the authority of the law. An algorithm, by contrast, has no conscience, no capacity for remorse, and no sense of responsibility.

Aristotle defined justice as a habit of the soul. Machines, lacking both soul and virtue, cannot fulfill this definition. Pascal adds another perspective: “Man infinitely surpasses man”. Even if human judgment is imperfect, it possesses a depth of conscience and accountability that no machine can reproduce.The risk is that algorithmic justice creates what some scholars call the “responsibility gap”: when a decision goes wrong, who is accountable? The programmer? The judge who relied on the system? Or the system itself? Law, however, requires responsibility to be personal and attributable—a condition machines cannot satisfy

4. The Danger of Over-Reliance

Another limitation is the illusion of objectivity. Because algorithms produce precise outputs with statistical confidence, judges and policymakers may be tempted to rely excessively on them. Yet as Erickson observed [8]in his work on the unconscious, much of human decision-making involves intuition and non-explicit[9] processes. By privileging algorithmic rationality, courts risk marginalizing these essential dimensions of judgment.

Over-reliance on algorithms may also reduce law to a technical exercise, ignoring its cultural, symbolic, and humanistic aspects. Justice is not only about rules but about meaning—about restoring trust, healing social wounds, and affirming human dignity. These are dimensions no algorithm can calculate.

5. The Normative Barrier

Finally, there is a fundamental normative barrier that no algorithm can cross. The passage from data and information to knowledge is already difficult; the passage from knowledge to norms is decisive. Norms involve value judgments, deliberation, and the authority of the state. They are not discovered in data but created through a process of collective and institutional reasoning.

Averroes’s dictum that “truth does not contradict truth” reminds us that law must harmonize with both reason and morality. But this harmony requires prudence (phronesis), empathy, and deliberation—qualities of the human mind, not of machines.[10]

Thus, while Part I has shown both the promises and the limits of algorithmic justice, the central question remains: how can we move from the raw material of data and the cognitive processes of the human brain toward the creation of binding legal norms? Answering this requires an interdisciplinary approach, where neuroscience, philosophy, and law converge to illuminate the delicate passage from neurons to norms.

Conclusion of the part 1: The Place of AI in the Judicial Function

The limits of algorithmic justice reveal a paradox. On the one hand, AI can support the judicial function by enhancing efficiency, consistency, and accessibility. On the other hand, it risks undermining the very essence of justice if treated as a substitute for human judgment.

Therefore, AI should be conceived not as a judge, but as an assistant to the judge—a powerful tool for transforming data into information, perhaps even into partial knowledge, but never into norms. Only human beings, endowed with conscience, responsibility, and moral discernment, can fulfill the normative act of justice.[11]

Part II: From Neuron to Norm – Toward an Interdisciplinary Approach

Having examined the promises and limits of algorithmic justice in Part I, it is now necessary to move beyond critique and address the deeper question: how do human cognitive processes, philosophical insights, and legal reasoning converge to transform neurons into norms? This inquiry requires an interdisciplinary approach, which we begin by exploring the cognitive and philosophical foundations of judgment.

A. The Cognitive and Philosophical Foundations of Judgment

1. Neuroscience of Decision-Making

Human judgment originates in the brain, an organ far more complex than any machine yet devised. Approximately 86 billion neurons communicate through synaptic connections, transmitting signals that generate thought, memory, and emotion. Neuroscience shows that judicial reasoning is not reducible to a linear algorithm; it involves both rational analysis and emotional engagement.

Modern studies reveal that areas of the prefrontal cortex are activated when judges apply rules logically, while the amygdala and limbic system are involved in moral and emotional evaluation. This dual activation suggests that judicial reasoning is both cognitive and affective. A ruling is not merely the outcome of syllogistic reasoning; it reflects the judge’s moral sensibility, cultural background, and human empathy.

Milton Erickson emphasized that much of human decision-making depends on the unconscious and intuition. Judges, like all human beings, often rely on intuitive assessments shaped by years of experience, before justifying their choices through rational arguments. Machines, by contrast, lack such unconscious dimensions; their calculations are explicit, linear, and ultimately limited.

2. Philosophical Perspectives on Justice

Philosophical traditions help us understand why judicial reasoning cannot be mechanized.

• Aristotle defined justice as a habit of the soul that inclines one to act justly. This conception emphasizes that justice is not merely a procedure but a virtue cultivated through moral education. Algorithms, lacking souls, cannot embody justice in this Aristotelian sense.

• Plato, in The Republic, warned that the judge must seek the truth, not mere persuasion. This distinction is crucial today, when algorithms persuade with predictive accuracy but cannot grasp moral truth.

• Al-Ghazali offered a metaphor that resonates with both philosophy and neuroscience: “Reason is like the eye: it sees, but it needs the light to perceive”. Reason without ethical guidance risks blindness. Similarly, AI without normative orientation[12] risks producing unjust outcomes even when its calculations are correct.

• Montaigne observed: “The subtlest folly grows out of the subtlest wisdom . His words anticipate the paradox of AI: the more sophisticated the algorithm, the greater the risk of subtle, systemic error.

• Pascal remarked: “Man infinitely surpasses man”. Even though humans are imperfect, their capacity for conscience and transcendence places them beyond mechanical imitation.

Together, these voices remind us that judgment requires more than data processing. It involves wisdom (phronesis), empathy, and moral responsibility—qualities absent in machines.

3. The Epistemological Chain Revisited

The transformation from data to norms illustrates the unique human role in justice:

• Data are raw facts (testimonies, documents, forensic results).

• Information arises when data are organized into admissible evidence.

• Knowledge emerges when judges interpret information in light of law, precedent, and context.

• Norms are the final stage, where knowledge is translated into binding rules and authoritative judgments.

AI is powerful in the first two steps, sometimes effective in supporting the third, but incapable of the fourth. Normativity requires conscience, deliberation, and responsibility. Only human judges, not machines, can bear the authority to transform knowledge into norms.

4. The Human Dimension of Responsibility

Responsibility is the cornerstone of the judicial function. Judges sign their decisions, justify them with reasons, and bear accountability before society. Algorithms, however advanced, cannot accept blame, feel remorse, or explain themselves in normative terms[13].

The “responsibility gap” is a major limitation of algorithmic justice: when a decision goes wrong, accountability becomes diffuse—does it lie with the programmer, the institution, or the judge who relied on the machine? Law requires responsibility to be personal and attributable, conditions that only human agents can fulfill.

Thus, while AI can support judicial reasoning, it cannot replace the uniquely human responsibility that defines justice.

Having established the cognitive and philosophical foundations of judgment, it is now essential to consider how these insights can be integrated into a broader interdisciplinary model. Subsection B will therefore examine how law, neuroscience, and philosophy together can frame the role of artificial intelligence in the judicial function, while preserving the normative essence of justice.

B. Toward an Interdisciplinary Model of Justice

1. The Role of Law

Law provides the institutional framework through which decisions acquire legitimacy. A judicial norm is not simply knowledge; it is an authoritative command backed by the coercive power of the state. This authority cannot be delegated to a machine without undermining the legitimacy of the legal order

Courts embody not only rules but also symbols of justice. They represent fairness, dignity, and the restoration of trust. Machines, however efficient, lack the cultural and symbolic authority to embody justice.

2. The Contribution of Neuroscience

Neuroscience helps us understand both the strengths and vulnerabilities of human judges. It reveals how cognitive biases, stress, and fatigue can influence decisions. It also shows how empathy and moral intuition play essential roles[14].

By studying these processes, neuroscience can help design better judicial training, improve courtroom procedures, and even guide the responsible integration of AI. Instead of replacing judges, neuroscience highlights the complexity of human judgment and the need to support it.

3. The Role of Philosophy

Philosophy offers a critical lens to question the meaning of justice. It reminds us that law is not merely a system of rules but an expression of values. Averroes affirmed that “truth does not contradict truth”, suggesting that justice must harmonize rationality with morality.

Philosophy also warns against technocratic illusion[15]s. It emphasizes that the law is a human science, grounded in dignity, freedom, and responsibility. Without philosophy, AI risks reducing justice to efficiency and prediction, stripping it of its ethical core.

4. Integration with Artificial Intelligence

The interdisciplinary challenge is to define the role of AI within the judicial function. AI excels in processing large amounts of data, detecting patterns, and predicting outcomes. These capacities can support judges in the data → information stages, providing useful tools for legal analysis.

However, the transformation from knowledge to norm must remain human. Only judges can integrate empathy, prudence, and responsibility. AI should therefore be conceived as a partner rather than a replacement, assisting in efficiency but subordinated to human oversight.

5. Collaborative Justice

The future of justice lies in collaboration between humans and machines. AI can help reduce backlogs, ensure consistency, and democratize access to legal information. Human judges, however, remain indispensable for moral reasoning, responsibility, and legitimacy.

This collaborative model preserves the best of both worlds: the efficiency of machines and the conscience of human beings.[16] It embodies the interdisciplinary spirit of law, neuroscience, and philosophy working together.

Part II has shown that from neurons to norms, the judicial function is shaped by biology, philosophy, and law, with artificial intelligence serving only as a supporting tool[17]. The interdisciplinary dialogue between these fields confirms that machines can never replace human responsibility. The next step is to reflect on the broader implications of this collaboration for the future of justice in the age of artificial intelligence.[18]

The reflections developed throughout this article reveal that the encounter between judges and machines constitutes one of the greatest intellectual and institutional challenges of our time. From the outset, the promise of algorithmic justice has been celebrated for its efficiency, consistency, and accessibility. Indeed, algorithms are capable of processing immense amounts of data, organizing them into usable information, and supporting judges in their daily tasks. They can reduce backlogs, standardize decisions, and improve access to legal knowledge for citizens. In this sense, the machine represents a valuable assistant to the human judge, one that can complement but not replace the judicial function.

Yet, as the analysis has also demonstrated, the limits of algorithmic justice are equally striking. By their very nature, algorithms are built on statistical correlations and historical data; they reproduce the biases of the past rather than transcending them. They lack conscience, empathy, and moral responsibility—the very elements that define justice. As Plato reminded us, “the judge must seek the truth, not persuasion like a sophist.” Machines, however sophisticated, cannot seek truth in its ethical and normative sense. They cannot sign a decision, bear accountability, or assume the moral weight of a judgment that may transform lives. The responsibility gap thus emerges as the most insurmountable barrier to the substitution of judges by machines.

This is where the interdisciplinary approach—moving from neurons to norms—proves essential. Neuroscience has shown that human decision-making is not purely rational but deeply embodied: it involves emotion, intuition, and unconscious processes. Philosophy reminds us that justice is not a mechanical outcome but a virtue, a habit of the soul cultivated through prudence and responsibility, as Aristotle affirmed. Law provides the institutional framework through which norms acquire authority and legitimacy. These three perspectives converge to demonstrate that justice is irreducibly human.

At the same time, interdisciplinarity also offers a constructive path forward. Neuroscience can help us understand the vulnerabilities of human judgment, from bias to fatigue, and propose ways to strengthen it. Philosophy can offer a critical lens to guide the ethical use of technology. Law can establish safeguards, ensuring that AI remains a tool under human control rather than a substitute for human conscience. In this sense, the future of justice is not a confrontation between judges and machines but a collaboration: machines provide efficiency and support, while judges preserve the normative, ethical, and human dimension of justice.

This conclusion does not deny the value of artificial intelligence in judicial contexts. On the contrary, it situates AI within its proper scope. AI is best understood as a servant of justice, not its master. It can assist judges in processing data, detecting patterns, and providing predictions, but the ultimate responsibility for transforming knowledge into norms must remain with human beings. Only the judge, [20]as a moral and accountable agent, can embody the authority of the law and guarantee the fairness of its application.[21]

To put it differently, the law cannot be reduced to a set of correlations or predictions. It is an expression of values, a dialogue between reason and morality, an attempt to harmonize factual truth with normative truth. As Averroes wrote, “truth does not contradict truth.” This harmony requires not only data and algorithms but also conscience and responsibility. Machines may contribute to the former, but only human beings can ensure the latter.

Ultimately, the article has demonstrated that the promise of algorithmic justice must be tempered by the recognition of its limits. Efficiency without responsibility is not justice. Prediction without conscience is not justice. Consistency without empathy is not justice. True justice requires the convergence of law, philosophy, and neuroscience in a human-centered approach.

In conclusion, the age of artificial intelligence calls for humility and vigilance. It challenges us to rethink the role of technology in the law, not as a threat to human judgment but as an opportunity to refine and strengthen it. The judicial function, from neurons to norms, is a profoundly human act that cannot be mechanized without losing its essence. Machines can support, but they cannot replace, the judge.

Justice, then, cannot be confined to the realm of numbers or predictions; it belongs to the realm of meaning, conscience, and responsibility. Algorithms may calculate, but only human beings can deliberate. Machines may predict, but only human beings can render justice. As Aristotle reminded us, justice is a virtue of the soul; as Al-Ghazali taught, reason needs the light of guidance; as Pascal observed, man infinitely surpasses man. In this surpassing lies the irreducible essence of justice: a human act that no machine, however powerful, can ever replace

Final Reflection

The future of justice lies in interdisciplinarity. Neither law, nor neuroscience, nor artificial intelligence can independently resolve the complex challenges posed by technological change. It is only through dialogue between these disciplines that we can build a justice system capable of embracing innovation without losing sight of its humanistic core.

This interdisciplinary effort requires three commitments:

1. Transparency – ensuring that AI systems are explainable and subject to democratic oversight.¹

2. Human oversight – guaranteeing that ultimate responsibility remains with judges and not with algorithms.²

3. Adaptability – acknowledging that norms must evolve alongside scientific and technological knowledge.³

By respecting these commitments, societies may avoid the dystopian scenario of a dehumanized justice and instead embrace a model of human–machine partnership. Law will then continue to serve as a bridge between neurons and norms, between the biological foundations of human life and the normative structures that govern collective existence.[22]
